Ammonites are amongst the most widely known fossils with their distinctive spiral shells
Yet each one is unique !

The quality, colour, paterns, and whether the chambers are completely filled with mineral deposits or not, will all depend on the fossilisation process of that particular shell, which is determined by where they are found. Simple ammonites are relatively commonplace in the UK, particularly on the Dorset coast, but all the ammonites for sale here are from Madagascar and have complex mineral ingress giving them exquisite colours and patterns.

Fraas: Handbuch des Petrefaktensammlers S.167 von 1910 Nautilus in Berlin Zoo Aquarium The name "Ammonite" comes from Egyptian mythology in which the god Ammon had the appearance of a man but with the horns of a ram. The ancient fossil was considered Ammon's stone hence the name Ammonite.

These creatures populated the seas between 240 and 65 million years ago but they, like the dinosaurs, became extinct. They were Cephalopods and had a hollow, chambered shell. The number of chambers actually increased as the creature grew. Typically they lived for approximately two years but some exceeded this and grew very large.

They preferred warm shallow waters unlike their modern day relative the Nautilus who prefer cold, deep, water which may be why the Nautilus survived the extinction experienced by the Ammonites.
