In ancient Egypt it was used by the Pharoahs
Fabulous examples were found in the tomb of Tutenkhaman

The oldest mines are in the Badakhsahn in Afghanistan
Deposits have been mined for over 6,000 years

Traces of Pyrite pepper the rock with an unmistakeable golden yellow

It contains a variety of other minerals with
Quality and value are determined by the abundance of the blue mineral Lazurite

Before Prussian Blue was developed Lapis was ground up by artists
To produce Ultramarine for tempera paint
